What is Spray Foam Roofing?

spray foam re-roof

A spray foam roofing system consists of polyurethane foam and is used for new commercial roofs or application over existing commercial roofs. It can be used to replace tar and gravel roofs and most other types of commercial roofing systems.

Used in conjunction with a UV protection coating, roofing foam forms a superior advanced commercial roofing system that seals and protects the roof.   The final product is a stable and seamless corrosion and solar shield.  A spray foam roofing system is low maintenance with a fast and efficient application.  This results in less down time for the business.  Any damage to the roofing system can be easily repaired without compromising the integrity of the roof.

The advantages of spray foam roofing include:

  • Lowers air conditioning costs due to its insulating value and reflectivity
  • Highest R value per inch compared with other options
  • Lightweight when compared to other roofing materials – reduces roof sag potential
  • Seamless
  • Seals cracks and crevices completely
  • Leak proof
  • Conforms to irregular shapes because it self flashes which reduces leaks
  • Easy to maintain
  • Cost effective when compared to other options that require tear offs
  • Re-coating extends roof life another 15-20 years
  • Quick installation
  • Highly resistant to high wind uplift and blow off
  • Decreases potential environmental impacts by reducing resource expenditures and minimizing the use of landfill capacity

Drawbacks of spray foam roofing include:

  • Subject to UV ray degradation.  The solution is to apply an elastomeric membrane to protect the foam.
  • Upfront costs are higher than some flat roofing systems. This is outweighed by the energy savings and lifespan of the roof.
  • Despite the hardness of roofing foam, punctures can occur which are easily repaired.
  • Roofing foam must be installed in temperatures above 50 degrees F.
  • Overspray can happen if an inexperienced crew is employed.  Our technicians are highly trained and experienced.

SPF roofing systems are referred to as “self-flashing” because when properly applied, the durable foam conforms and adheres to a variety of shapes and substrates, forming a seamless, monolithic barrier.

What does that mean for the roof over your head?

  1. Reduced ponding due to unique roof designs and various application thicknesses to create a positive slope and improve drainage.
  2. Reduced leakage due to coverage around seams, penetrations, parapet walls, HVAC curves, vents and skylights.
  3. Polyurethane foam roofs eliminate the need for counter flashing.

With minimal maintenance and repair, a spray foam roof is the last roof you will ever need.  It will save you time, money and aggravation as well as downtime from major roof repairs.
